Kate Gorringe-Smith’s Exhibition:Connected(Across the Waters)

KATE GORRINGE-SMITH
'Connections' is a community art installation in two parts designed to celebrate the rich ecology of Warn Marin/Western Port and the reciprocity between the people who love the bay and the more-than-human elements that create its unique character. It also recognises, with gratitude, the Bunurong and Boon Wurrung people, the traditional custodians of these lands, waters and skies, who respected and nurtured Warn Marin’s biodiversity for so many thousands of years and continue to do so. The central pieces (in blue) feature the shapes of 30 different local animals and plants. These have been decorated by members of the Warn Marin/Western Port community, from secondary students at St Peter’s College, Cranbourne, to members of the refugee community at the Bass Coast Adult Learning Centre, Wonthaggi. Most were decorated using the photographic technique of cyanotyping, which used the elements of the bay – the sun, water and natural materials – to create delicate blue and white patterns. The prints of birds (in brown) are part of the Wall of Wings, an international community-based eco-art project designed to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds. Warn Marin/Western Port is internationally significant habitat for these birds that connect the world and spend the summer months, from October to May, here on our shores. 'Connections' was co-ordinated by Melbourne/Naarm based artist Kate Gorringe-Smith with the assistance of Inverloch based artist Susan Hill.
